    In Maine?

$12.00 an hour if you're good; you'll have to pay part of the bennies.

    Anywhere else, double it.

    But...

... that's minimum wage, man. Nobody with a trade works for anything like that. We got tired of fighting for scraps in sunny Ontario, so my sons & I bailed out, and headed for Alberta. The table on the link shows 8 bucks an hour for Alberta. For pipefitters (or welders, electricians, ironworkers, scaffolders, heavy duty mechanics, crane operators, etc.) it's like a gold rush. Good hourly rates, full benefits, and all the overtime you want and/or can stand. If you're working a "camp job" in the boonies, contractors provide free room & board, and transportation to and from civilization.

My two older sons are 3rd year apprentices - one's a pipefitter, the other a HD mechanic. They'll have no problem at all making $90K this year. Full family benefits are on top of that - life insurance, Alberta Health coverage, vision, dental, prescription drugs, etc. Journeymen will have no trouble making over $120K working five 10 hour days, and an 8 on Saturday.

And still they can't get enough people to staff the jobs. I've worked with fitters and welders from the Phillipines, India, South Africa, and Poland. There's an article in Saturdays Edmonton Journal about how they're wondering how they'll staff the next big project on the books - they need 10,000 skilled tradesmen. They can identify where they can get just half that number. One line states "If you can weld, please get in touch with us..."

Bring your winter Carhartts. It's been below zero F here for two weeks, and it's a lot better that last year. That kind of weather showed up a full month earlier in '06.
  • Tony Conner,

I think that is just great for you, and your sons!
Life is NOW, make BIG money NOW, try to forget about any other attitude.
My living is small(compared to theirs), but I will have done my part as opposed to monetary gain.
