Life in the big city, Manhattan New York. I've come across a what seemed to be a simple solution. I responded to a call of loud banging noise from the steam pipe. There was a 2 x 3/4" steam tee at the floor{top floor of a twelve story building} on the bull of the tee there was a check valve. On the run of the tee the 2" went across the ceiling twenty feet back pitched and fed a 3/4" pipe that goes up into the roof tank and the other side of the tee went back to the chech valve. I saw no need for this lay out even though it looked like it was installed twenty years ago. I ran a new line full 2" up into the 3/4" pipe.
I get a call the next day that it still bangs some say even louder. What can i do to get rid of the banging.

Is it necessary to have a drip leg with check valve tie back into one pipe steam

    Bryan,

The pipe up to the roof tank is there to keep the water from freezing in the winter.
That pipe will always be in a cold environment and should probably be tied back into the system with an F&T trap.

    I hear you, but...

...I've had this problem. In a building on Lafayette St., where a warehouse was converted into loft apartments, the system made loud noises for 70 years and no one cared until people came to live there 10 years ago.

The piping to the roof tank had to be reconfigured to accommodate something to keep that branch somewhat isolated from the rest of the system.

We repiped it creating a loop into a trap with an air vent. It was pretty involved, but nothing else worked like that did.

...one of those "outside the box" things, I guess.

Hey JohnNY I like were youre going with this. But let me tell you what I've recently discovered. I went to the top of the roof tank(SCARY) and found that the pipe inside the tank is 2". The pipe inside the space is 3/4". So we assumed the pipe was 3/4" all the way and like I said before we piped the 2" right up to the 3/4 leaving only a nipple showing.

    adventures in steamfitting

I have worked on hundreds of seven storey apt. bldgs with one pipe steam with dozens of f & t traps. the two inch line is merely a standpipe in lieu of radiation. piping that is modified in systems on twelve story bldgs by contractors unfamiliar with that particular system can be held for any damage occurring due to changes or additions. make sure your liability policy is current & up to snuff. a leak on the top floor can due severe damage on the way down. good luck

we quiet them down all the time

You're right about no one cares until they sell the top floor for 2 or 3 million dollars.
I have fixed lots of them on both two pipe and one.
Two is easier, one is doable.
I never use an F&T. (Sorry JohnNY)
All of mine are totally quiet.
If you're not careful, you solve the banging problem, but now the cold water isn't so cold anymore. HA HA
Call me if you haven't figured this out yet and I'll run you through how to do it.
I could even show you a few.
