OT: Portable music files question................(Starch)

Maybe you need to connect the phone to the laptop via USB and let the phone transfer the files. Or they want you to buy the music with the phone?

So......I just got a new cell phone........

....and it has a MP3 player in it. There's a little memory card thingamajiggy that I can plug into the slot on my laptop to store music on the card.

Problem is, when I do this, the files seem to transfer ok, but the phone won't see them. It says it doesn't recognize the file format.

Anyone care to help me figure out what to do????

    TIA,

    Starch

    Change storage device

I have a Motorola, and here is what I have to do:

If you go to Multimedia then Sounds then when the list comes up you hit the Menu button again and select Switch Storage Device. Change it from the internal phone memory to your memory card and then the songs on the card should show up. You can also use the songs as ringtones, but you have to move them to the phone memory first.

    The problem seems to be....

...that my files are all in "Media Player" format, and the phone needs 'MP3' format.

Is there an easy way to convert the file format??

You can download a free program called "Switch". Look for it in Google. It will do conversions to MP3 format. I just went through the same thing with my new phone.

How did you get the files into the phone? I have a card reader that plugs into a USB port and I transfered them onto the card. Seems to me you should be able to if you just plug the phone directly into the USB.

...came with a memory card, and an adapter that the card slildes into to plug into the SD slot on my laptop.

I downloaded the "switch" software, and it workS!!!!

Now I'm trying to figure out if I can use a song stored on the memory card as a ringtone. Any ideas???

I was just thinking about that today. I have no idea. Let me know if you figure it out.

    So far.....

...all I can seem to do is play the songs, not use them as ringtones. I figured out how to move pictures back and forth from the card to the phone, but not the audio files (no pun intended!).

I would love to have Warren Zevon's "Lawyers guns and Money" be the ringtone for when my attorney calls me!!!!

I get the feeling that it's not possible to use your MP3 as a ring tone. Then they couldn't charge you for them.

    What phone do you have?

    Oh, OK

Ive got the new ic910. It's the Sprint/Nextel hybrid. Too many features for a guy used to plain old Nextels.
