Hydronic Tobacco

of a long time ago when I was working for a commercial mech contractor. A 10 story bank with perimeter water source heat pumps had a floor that had no or little flow. We had to build a scaffold up 3 floors and take out bricks to get to the riser where it elbowed into an overhang. We cut it out and found someone had been dropping cig buts and trash down the pipe from the roof during construction. Another reason cap and seal pipes when your not on the job. Great pics for reminding us. Thanks. WW

After locking out my boiler on \"Temp Overshoot\"

and wrestling with flow related issues thru the HX. I pulled ALL of this out of a 1" wye-strainer. The plastic case is from a roll of electrical tape and it is about 1/4" high of sediment.

This system took 2 months of operation to get all of the sediment to the inlet of the boiler. A wye-strainer stopped everything in its tracks.....including flow thru the boiler.

As for the "Hydronic Tobacco". Just a pinch of this between my cheek and gums gives me full hydronic tobacco pleasure.

If you are not putting wye-strainers on mod-con boilers. Where do you think this sediment will wind up? Hint, this DID make it thru all of my circulators with integral flow-checks.

  • wow. That was on a brand new system, or a retrofit?

    Strainers

Good job Paul. I won't do a mod-con install on an existing hydronic system with out a wye strainer. The reasons are all stated right there in your picture!

    Brand new install

This was a brand new install, commissioned 2 months prior.

    Here is a job pic.

Did it enter with the fill water?

or where did it get into the system? That is quite a bit for a brand new install.

Interesting thought on the fill water....

I hadn't thought of that. We are at the end of a circle drive and doubt if the plumber on-site flushed the lines.

Here is a different perspective. I took the sediment and stuffed it back into a scrap of 1" copper. The tower of sludge is a little over 2" high.

I have never experience this much sediment in a new install.

    It looks a lot like

the stuff you flush from the outside of some mod con HXers or the condenstae traps.

    that is an Eye opener.

thank you . i did not look for one yet that could very well be the minor technicality within the system i looked at last night. there is a distinct absence of a y strainer anywhere on the "system."

    Judging

by the workmanship I doubt that your crew let that stuff get in the system. Is it ferrous? Check it with a magnet. On large jobs that have the system open for a long time you find all kinds of junk but not usually on a residence. I always thought Hot Rods idea of useing distilled water was a little over kill, maybe not. bob
