Water Streaming Out of Steam Radiator Vent!!!

HELP!! We have an old house with the ORIGINAL oil steam heating sytem. It CLANGS loudly when the heat starts up and my husband in a fit of frustration removed the vent from one radiator this morning and a STREAM of water shot 3 feet out. Not understanding what he said, I did the same thing with the same result. I think there should not be water in my radiator. Should we remove the vent again and empty it out? Or will it purge directly from the boiler if I use the water release on it? Is it dangerous? Other radiators gurgle. Please help.
