Boiler struggles

What type of Beckett are you using ... AFG or NX?

Is your combustion makeup air coming directly from inside room where the boiler is or from outside using an intake kit?

If from the outside, are you using a VR-1 (vacuum breaker)? Use of outside air is problematic, especially in cold weather like now. If you are using outside air and have a vaccum breaker, try keeping the damper plate open to allow mixing of warm inside air. If this works for you then you could consider pulling the VR-1 and adding a 2nd intake from inside to temper (warm) the outside air.

I tend to agree with Kevin that Riello/Carlin tend to be a better match-up for this boiler ... but both can also have issues with outside air.

Other tricks include boasting pump pressure, using the optimal electrode spacing, assuring that the burner is properly tuned and not running with excessive air. All of these adjustments need to be made by a qualified technicial with the tools to assure proper combustion parameters!

    Boiler struggles

I had a new oil fired boiler installed this summer. It is a buderus boiler with a beckett burner. The boiler supplies heating and hot water. When the boiler fires when cold (I also heat with wood, so at times there are longish periods that the boiler doesn't run) it struggles to get going. It will try to fire, and is very loud, and quit after several seconds (maybe 30?). The indicator on the burner flashes (recycle), and then after a minute or so it tries to fire again. The longest it takes is to or 3 attempts, and then it usually always gets going. The installer says it is because the flue is cold, and the flue needs to heat up. Is he on the mark, or could it be something else? I trust the installer, but just trying to educate myself whether this is normal, or possible resolutions. Any input would be appreciated.

    cold flues and....

three pass boilers are a not so hot mix. Is it an outside chimney? A couple of thoughts to help...a chimney liner(stainless steel) would help... also by using a triple aquastat to keep the boiler hotter all the time...set the low limit low 120F.Is there a barometric draft diverter on the smokepipe? hope this helps.

The flue is a selkirk stainless jobby that runs through the center of the house into a cold attic and outside. There is a draft diverter on the smoke pipe (the over-sized butterfly valve with the round moveable weight?) I don't know what an triple aquastat is, but I'm hoping to figure this out with out running the boiler more than I need for heat and hot water. Also, whether there is something wrong that I should be looking to the installer to correct or if this is normal. Thanks for the info.

Sorry, I know what an aquastat is, I will have a look at what is on there, and check the temperature. I know it's a honeywell of some sort....

Yeah, boiler wouldn't fire this morning. 1 day off, hung over, snowing, of course the heat won't work. Called the installer, I'll see we're that goes. Thanks for the help.

    something is not.....

set up right...But I will be honest I am not a fan of Beckets on Buderus boilers...a Riello or a carlin is much more my preferance.
