Pressure differential valves

Any particular brands that work any better....and how does one go about sizing one? Going to use one on p/s piped BB. And, does this work if using manifolds?

Comments

  • PD valves

I use these , and as described, sizing is not difficult.
Just install it at the end of your header.

Just install it at the end of your manifold, much easier to control system than a hand BV.

I like the B&G version over the Taco. Those are the only two I've used. I like that the B&G has its own union

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Install 'em

with at least one isolation valve or purging can be difficult. Isolation on either side makes for easier service should debris become lodged under the seat.

If delta p circs become accepted and used the parasitic PBV will become a non issue.

Thanks for asking the question. I'd like to know, too. I don't mean to lead the thread in another direction, but I AM mystified why the two local plumbing/heating supply distributors I visited locally (Minneapolis and St. Paul) did NOT stock differential pressure bypass valves. Maybe I picked bad days for them... but when I spoke clearly and slowly -- and even explained the function of the valve -- they did not even recognize the part. :-(

    I conclude:

    1. The Midwest may be a hydronic backwater?

    2. Wallies are VERY talented, experienced, advanced, walk on water, etc. :-) They know EVERYTHING.

    3. John Siegenthaler's thick $100 magnum opus is NOT toilet reading at our local plumbing/heating supply distributors.

    Anything else?

    The Honeywell Braukman

seem to be the easiest to find in my neck of the woods. Kansas City, Chicago, etc. Find a savvy "hydronic" wholesaler and they will be a stock item.

    Good replies, many thanks!

I appreciate it very much!.. during testing/startup, how does one go about adjusting the valve correctly?

    Honeywell's are...

The D1461032 (3/4 inch) and the D146M1040 (1 1/4 inch), with 18 gpm and 50 gpm capacity respectively. Any hydronic oriented distributor should have these, but if not they can order them, and they are quick to ship, being made in the "Peoples Republic of Rhode Island".

    PBD's

I like the Oventrop PBD which comes with a chart to dial in the setting for any US pump size. Too easy!! We buy them in Wyoming (Blueline Supply). Local Seattle distributors stock some models. I also use the Danfoss PBD's. Both are compact and easy to install.

The pic shows the PBD valve and a system bypass on a gravity conversion (25 CI rads in the home). The 4 way valve gives boiler protection from thermal shock, and the system bypass gives absolute protection when using a cast iron boiler. When I did this job, the wall hung condensing boilers were not available. Oh well...
