steam (short cycles)

I am in the basement doing paperwork and I hear my new Burnham IN7 boiler cycling off and on very often. The controller is set at about 1.5 lbs and the dif. is at about .75 lbs.
I just watched the cycle, the boiler shut off at about a half a pound. Do you think it's the Honeywell programmable thermostat up stairs that making the boiler turn on at a fraction of a degree drop and shut off at another fractional rise? the thermostat is on an interior wall.

    thermostat

did you configure the thermostat for steam? If a new thermostat is used "out of the box" then its still set up for forced air (the default factory setting) and will short cycle the boiler wasting energy.

  • short cycle

Hi Dan, many times a steam boiler short cycles because of a clogged pigtail, which is the curved pipe that your pressuretrol is attached to.

This is a new installation, do you think it could clog that quickly? Also I have (2) pressure gages on the boiler and they are only on about 1/2 lbs when the boiler shuts off?
what do you think about the thermostat theory?

    burnham

    Hi,
I have baseboard water heat. Heater uses gas and its model is burnham PXG-200AA-WNI, 82000 BTU gas water heater. I just replaces water in the entire system one month ago, now since last 15 days I see water vapour comming out of the heater setup. Is this a problem? How should I fix this? I just paid 250 so get the water out a month ago so do I have to call technician ?

    Download installer instructions from Honeywell

Find the page at Honeywell for your tstat and download the installer instructions. If you have a VisionPro 8000, you would enter installer setup by pressing system, then holding down buttons 3 and 5 of the 7 along the bottom row, until the display changes to a 4 digit function code and a 2 digit setting code. Use the up arrow to change the function code to 0240 (first stage heat cycle rate) and make sure the setting code is 01, for 1 cycle per hour.

I recommend you find the setup instructions for your model online and go through the settings one by one to make sure they all make sense.

Dan, Did changing the settings help with the frequent cycling of your boiler?
