When I recently installed different, larger vents on my single pipe main, the openings where they actually vent ended up about a half inch from my subfloor. I stapled up a couple of pieces of 6" wide aluminum roll flashing to the underside of the floor above the vents to stop the hot air and possible steam from impinging directly on the wood.

Is this a good idea, a bad idea, or totally unnecessary?

I'm not worried at all about catching the wood on fire from superheated steam. . . more concerned about warping it from hot dry air or, conversely, from wet steam. If the vent fails open at some point, I don't want to steam the floor above it and cause buckling or ruin the finish.

I was puzzling over whether the flashing would protect the wood from moisture damage, or if moisture would work around it and get trapped in.
