Mark, I'm sorry I have not got in touch. Fred left me with a real turd to deal with on a snow melt system and the owners of FSH want it dealt with. I would love to meet with you and try to talk about this house. The house in Question has several deficiencies mainly with the glazing. I'll try to call 12/19 to set up an meeting. Thanks Mark
Matt.

How DO those fancy heated windows work?
I read the article but the explanation is not clear to me. What happens when that *%&#@ little Johnny puts his baseball through one?0 -
It shuts off...
It's made of tempered safety glass, so it breaks into the little corn pieces, not the long sword chards.
There will be enough free play on the wiring, and a wiring junction directly below the window to allow for replacement, if needed.
Hit's happen, and if you aren't prepared for them,it can be a pain...
We're prepared.
I'm meeting with one of the co-inventors today to experiment with arched top windows, trapezoid windows and mirrors. He has them built, and has them heating, and wants to quicky chill (think bucket of cold water) them to see how they handle the oddities of thermal stress. Whadda guy:-)
Thanks for asking.

Cool,,,
But I'm curious, does the inside panel itself conduct the electricity and warm up or is there a coating on the glass that does it? What kind of amperage do they draw?0 -
THe glass industry...
counts their surfaces from the outside in. Surface one is in direct contact with the great out doors, and surface 4 is in direct contact with the great indoors.
Surface 3 is heated. It has a minute layer of tin oxide that was applied at the time the glass saw still semi molten from the safety tempering process. This surface area is completely away from any potential human contact. Even if a human were to contact it, there is a safety circuit that would detect a direct short and trip the power off.
Typical draws depend on a number of variables, but should fall somewehere betwixt 20 and 40 watts per square foot, at 48 volts DC..

Regarding the mirror thing...
Stangest thing. The glass surface was 115 degrees F, as verified by a type K thermocouple, and an IR thermometer.
But as you stood in front of the mirror, and even holding your hand in front of it, it doesn't seem to emit as much heat radiantly, as you would think it should. I dunno, could be me, but it just don't seem to kick the heat out the way the bare glass does...
But I GUARANTEE you that it will NOT fog up in a bathroom :-)

Pretty neat stuff...
I was not aware of the mirror aspect, I like that too. I've seen all the stuff about pex or whatever behind the bathroom mirror but never got into it myself. Hmmm, what else can we do with this stuff. I wonder, because I'm like that, if you took a smallish piece of 1/4" plywood, 6" x 6" let's say, painted it flat black and either attached a surface sensing thermometer or did an infrared reading of the surface would you see a difference in heat absorbed from the mirror vs from the windows. Does the mirror have any insulation behind it? I know how tough it is to get back in and experiment once they move in. There's a few things I'd still like to try at that Glastonbury project that will probably never happen. It's working and they're happy so c'est la vie I guess.0 -
Mark Ive got a strong lead on another house! Call me.
I think we need some face time on this one they seam to mean business, nice house in denver 6500 sq ft P. V. on the roof and a challenging heat load. Thank you Mark.0 -
Lets do lunch next week....
I'll give you a call and we can go down and tour the glass plant.

Can I go?
I love lunch...
I know you''re all the way in Denver but maybe I can get Chuck Norris to roundhouse kick me there...

windshield
Can you make one for my service van? I've always wanted a heated windshield. They are std on some vehicles. Really, it sounds like a great time to be working with very new ideas and products.0
