5-1 turn down ?
5-1 just means it modulates down to that minimum ratio (1/5 of max output). It's full modulation, in that range.
That is different than staged or step modulation, where you just have discreet outputs you can turn on or off as loads increase... such as when you have two boilers, you can "modulate" your load to "high", or "Low", but nothing in between.
I think that might be your confusion at least?
No one is making an infinitely modulating boiler that can go to zero... yet.

5-1 turn down?
I have used the Knight boilers for the last couple of jobs. very happy with them. I used the munchkins in the past. I just read a brochure about the revision two munchkins having full modulation they didnt get real spicific about it though. Is it true full modulation. I think the older versions were 5-1 turn down. I could see the brochure saying modulating for a 5-1 boiler since they are all refered to as MOD/CONS. If it is really full modulation that is great. Makes me wonder who else is making fully modulaton boilers.0 -
Zero
I have one firing at zero now..its inthe trailer waiting to be installed..:)0 -
haha, fair enough. can it modulate up to 1 BTU?? heheh.0 -
Minimum turn down...
is typically 20% for the tube type burners. I think the Vitodens Matrix burner can be turned lower due to flue gas adaptation feature and a completely different design of burner.
Problem with tube type burners may be flash back of gas to the INSIDE of the burner assembly.
And that is the WRONG place to have the fire :-)
The nice thing about turn down is that if you have three boilers, for example, you then have a 15 to 1 turn down. We're doing a snowmelt system right now that has 3 KBN500's connected to three different zones of snowmelt. I can't wait to fire that sucker when it is ice cold outside and listen to them babies hummm. They'll all three be cascaded together. Nothing like watching a well orchestrated three piece mill and a half band play Tchaikovskys fifth...in the key of B :-)
