Big loss for our little town

On Sunday one of our hisoric downtown blocks was burned to the point of needing immediate demolition. For those of you who cam to the Big Ugly Western Mass in July and drove through the downtown You know how historic these buildings are. built in the late 1800's this one housed 4 businesses and 3 apartments. Balloon construction. What an incredible job our fire departments did to save the rest of the buildings on that side of the street, only a narrow alleyway between buildings. And no injuries to anyone. Just have a thought for those who lost everything. The worst is that most of our other downtown bubiness are closed because of power shut off due to water in all the basements. Link to write up is http://shelburnefallsfirebenefit.org/

Man... I used to live up the hill from there, in Florida... I spent a lot of quality time at the coffee shop there... I'm sure they'll rebuild bigger and better... Glad no one was hurt...

Awful, my thoughts are with you

Being a "preservationist" and living in a smaller town with a historic downtown, I can certainly empathize with this loss.

As they say, you can't go "build a new old building" ... once they are gone... they're gone =(

I'm sorry to see this has happened. Perhaps the town can use the old bricks and other surviving materials on park walks, other buildings, etc...

    Good luck!
    Al
