ok so you know you should have hired a pro the question is why didn't you. Download the boiler install manual and start over.

Water in Boiler keeps getting emptied

Can you please tell me what's wrong with this setup and the proper way of putting the pipes (see attached pictures). I was told it's the return pipes that are messed up. I just got this gas powered boiler (Crown Steam Boiler brand) installed by a neighboor 3 weeks ago but water keeps rising on to the main pipe thus shutting down the boiler everytime the pressure rises. I know i should have hired a pro... Thanks for your help.

    Let's See Now....

Nice boiler. Needs to be unchained.

Start with the Crown installation manual and diagrams as these will govern anything I can offer both for means, methods and sizing. I do not have the guides available to me now so will stick to general principles.

The system take-off (now goes vertically right off the boiler with the equalizer starting as a tee off that riser):

The pipe leaving the boiler wants to rise at least 24 inches, maybe increased a size, then turn horizontally and continue pitched toward the equalizer. Some sizes of boiler may want to use two tappings or more from the boiler. I do not know the size of your boiler nor the specific requirements. (Again, the manual governs here.)

The system take-off wants to roll off this horizontal pitched header at a 45 degree angle from vertical or even directly vertical. This will get you much dryer steam.

What you have now has the riser and associated water heading up into the distribution piping and is asking that excess moisture to take a sudden hard turn into the equalizer. Wet steam will head up into your system.

Think of Judo, leveraging the momentum of water-laden steam out of the boiler. Get it all going in a loop back to the boiler by force and then by gravity. The dryer steam can make it's way out of the header with ease; the water stays behind and returns immediately.

The equalizer wants to be at least 1-1/2" size. What you have looks like 1-1/4" pipe size. It may be the correct size, just hard to tell. Do check that. I would keep it at 1-1/2" if not the boiler return connection size.

The return wants to connect into that equalizer 2 inches below the waterline with a close nipple, then drop to near the floor. This forms the classic Hartford Loop. What you have would not get you past Bridgeport with your tires intact.

Some valves at the base of the returns would help to allow flushing out.

Others have commented on the practical aspects of the piping,.. I'll concentrate on the aesthetic,... It looks as if he applied the pipe dope with his tongue.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Use the search function for "drop header".

The finest steam men seem to swear by them even if they're rather expensive and not particularly easy to construct--the first time at least...
