hybrid system using tankless

Looked into a side arm convertor off the side of the boiler? Or go into Dan's Resource (library) and look up "System Piping Techniques" there is a well written article there about taking a hot water zone off of a steam boiler.

Good Luck!

Can I use the tankless coil on my steam boiler to heat a room

I have a room that needs to be heated, but I have been told adding to the steam system is impractical. Can I attach a circulator and expansion tank to the tankless coil and heat the room with the hot water? My other options are quite costly!

    Absolutely yes!

Done it many times. Piece of cake.

Use the coil to heat anything (radiant, domestic hot water or simple HWBB - OR ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

Easy to do. Simply think of the hottest demand water temp required. Pipe the inlet and outlet as a bypass arrangement. By placing a small ball valve between the in and outlets, you can control how much bypasses the coil and how much passes thru. Remember the coil is a source of BTU's - not the pathway per se.

If you need a sketch/schematic, let me know.

We do it every once in a while . A few things to consider .... Has the coil been used for hot water ? For how long ? I'd try to clean the inner part of the coil if it was used a long time .

And you can only heat so much extra space before it'll stop the boiler from steaming . I believe , if the boiler is sized right for your home , you can add 33 percent extra in btus of the boiler you have . To get around that if you have problems you can always prioritize the steam zone .

Here's a recent install where we used the coil for a baseboard zone . There was no need for a bypass - with the boiler steaming , the highest temp to leave the coil was 190 .
