And it will most likely leak within a year. The EPA and OSHA has taken all the good stuff out of everything. Solvents that do not clean, Paints that do not stick. What makes anyone think that boiler sections will seal wuth the new stuff

Sorry, just a rant. Nothing you buy today works or lasts like the old stuff

    Asbestos Rope.

So we're putting together a cast-iron sectional boiler today at work. My first one. The sections are separated by a gasket made of rope. I know that asbestos rope was used for this purpose years ago, but I thought it had been replaced with a safer material. I noticed the way the rope shined under the trouble light and got to thinking...
Should I be worried, try to track down a dust mask, etc?

I think you`re worried about nothing, asbestos has been banned by boiler manufacturers(and most everywhere else), a long time now.
If you would feel safer about-it, a mask would most certainly do you no harm.

    Thanks Dave,
I thought as much but I had to ask and make sure.

Hopefully the "rings or push nipples" will seal, but I suspect he meant the CC "rope" between the sections.
True though, they don`t "build em" like they used-to, THANK GOD!

    repalcement rope

If you read the warnings that come with most high temp rope a mask is reccommended as they contain silica and/or fiberglass. The silica causes silicosis (same as asbestosis) in the lungs. Its not asbestos though so its OK!!!!
