Sharks out there...

rental property.

Luxaire Furnasty, about 25 or more years old. No safeties remaining. AT ALL.

Tenant was turning on the fan whenever they turned on the thermostat so they could have some heat. If they ever forget to turn on the fan, the house would have melted.

Landlord was supremely peeved when I turned off the furnace. We replaced it today.

I couldn't have that house on my conscience.

Got a no heat call from a friend of my wife, and she had been told it was a $1700 fix. I found it needed a new fan motor only. Much cheaper shall we say. The last 'tech' left the inducer motor pulled and parts everywhere. I had to totally re-assemble to check the ignition process and ensure there was not another problem...what a jerk. I wish I could get those prices for a blower motor!

    Jeff,

You definitely prevented property damage, and probably saved lives.

The hack disconnects the safeties and leaves it running.

Recognizing that kind of problem and taking that step to "red tag" an obviously dangerous unit is one of the many things that separate the pros from the hacks.

    Good catch.

I ran into nearly the same scenario a number of years ago and it made me so mad I could have shot the other contractor (I use that term loosely)

A man called and said he needed help with an oil furnace. He was not a current customer (he is now) and his voice sounded like he was in feeble health. I went there to find a gentleman (in every sense of the word) in a wheelchair due to MS, and a house at about 46* IIRC. The jerk that had been there before obviously figured this was an easy mark because the old gent couldn't get down the basement to see what was going on. I went down to find the Beckett completely disasembled and strewn across the floor and returned to question the old man about what his original complaint was. He informed me that all he had asked for was an annual service and the furnace had been running fine. The lowlife that had looked at it had been in the basement over an hour and made all kinds of noise presumably to make it sound like he was really doing something. Upon coming back up the stairs he told the old gent that the HX was shot and he needed a new furnace.

Long story short, I reassembled everything, replaced the nozzle and the unit fired right up. A combustion test revealed that the old Bard ran just fine. It seems like it happened right about this time of year. Maybe the other guy needed money for Christmas. Kinda misses the meaning of the whole deal.
