main valves

If the mains have no place for a main vent, how much, ballpark, am I looking at to have a pipe added to each main to accomodate a vent?

    Main Valves

Is it normal in a steam sytem that has 4 mains, each feeding 2 radiators, one feeding three, to only have 1 stud sticking up for a main valve? Right now it has a cap on it, which I will replace with a main valve. The one that has the spur extends around a corner about 12 feet past the last radiator, about a foot and a half before it makes a U-turn to the return line it has a apx 1" pipe sticking up about 8" with a cap on it. I assume there should have been a main valve there at some point, and I think it extends past the last radiator so another radiator could be addded to the pack porch, to make living space. None of the other mains have anything like this. Should I have main valves installed? Also, when we moved in all the asbestos was removed and pipes were bare. How much fuel was this wasting? Thanks
  • They should all be vented

measure the length and diameter of each main and we can tell you what you need.

If your mains were not re-insulated, they lose roughly five times as much heat. Insulate them using fiberglass insulation made for piping that is 1-inch thick.
