Like I have done with the Slantfin Galaxies and Gerry and STeve did with the Burhamn Independance boilers.
HMMM Step fired, 87% efficient boilers...sounds like potential big savings.

One Pipe Steam Heating System - New Condensing Boiler

I have a customer that would like to replace an ancient
Cast Iron Sectional boiler with a new condensing boiler.
The system is a one pipe steam with cast iron rads
in apartments (4 to 6 story apt building). Existing boiler was tested at about 75% efficiency.

    The following are my questions:
    (1) Can energy savings can be acheived?
    (2) If so, would there have to be any piping changes?
    (3) Which supplier would have this type of boiler??

    thanks, Dave
  • Dave(great name),

to my knowledge no manufacturer as come up with a condensing boiler for steam,,but they`re working on it!
And yes, he will see savings by changing,,,check out Burnhams site for models, they have a good product!

  • Too bad this isn't residential

the Burnham Mega-Steam is far and away the best residential steamer available, but not big enough for this job.

As far as I know the only steam boilers available in this size range are pin-type units, but they would still be more efficient than a coal-converted one.

    Condensing steam boiler??!!

_Who's_ working on it? I'd like to know so I can send them fan mail, flowers, Scotch at Christmas, etc. Stack temp alone makes the boiler room the coziest in our house- kills me to pay to heat the chimney. *sigh*
