Master Venting

'Tis the season, so I say, make it a Menorah... especially if you do not have head-height. By extending the arms with more tees and vents you can fine-tune your venting to even the largest mains from a single reasonable tapping.
I think my ideal would be a centered #2 shamish with an equal number #1's off to each side... :)
I put in one recently that has four Gorton #1's (Same venting capacity as a "D" as noted elsewhere in this thread). I could have used a #2 and a #1 but could not fit the #2. The #2 I figure as worth about three to three and a half #1's by the way. OK call it four, no big deal...
DO buy the Gill and Pajek booklet. A good cause and fantastic resource, not found in stores!

Master Venting
I am trying to determine which option would provide more venting capacity, a single large air vent like a Gorton #1 or #2 or putting together a menorah type device that has 3 or 4 (or even 5) Gorton D's on it.
Basically, I guess I want to know what the ratio of venting capacity of a #2 to a D is. Thanks0 -
If I recall...
a Gorton D is a radiator vent... A #2 is equal to 4 -#1's use these to vent the mains. kpc

Thanks, that helps. But I also wanted to know how many D's a #2 is equivalent to. I have been told that it is better to create a master venting device that is essentially a Tee with multiple large radiator vents (like the D), or Heat Timer Varivents fully open than to use a single large vent like a Gorton #2.
On the same subject, anyone know what the venting capacity of the Varivents is compared to something like a D? Thanks.0 -

gorton
a gorton D is the same capacity as a gorton 1, therefore a gorton 2 = 4d's.. but the D is 1/8" for radiator.. the 1 is 1/2" or 3/4" for mains0 -
Yeah, but
it does take some time to do a menorah, but if you need more than one vent on one riser that's the way to go.
I assume you've measured the length and diameter of your steam mains. The usual 2-inch pipe has .023 cubic foot of air per running foot, and the 2-1/2-inch pipe .030 cu. ft.
When you get Gerry and Steve's charts, you will note that the vents are rated at 1, 2 and 3 ounces. I always use the 1-ounce column for main vents since that makes them vent fastest.
The Gorton D will vent about the same as the Gorton #1. If space is limited this can be a big help. The Gorton #2 is the fastest vent made today.
