Jimi's Birthday

I'd heard of Mahogony Rush but never listened to them.

Technically right there but the version of Red House I saw lacks soul. He can play with the best of them but seems to lack .... feeling ?

Reminds me of what Pete Townsend said about Jeff Beck; " the most expressive guitarist with nothing to say ".

Scott

PS: Mark, I'll keep listneing when I have more time.

    Actually it was yesterday

Jimi as we all know him as was born 1942 and was died by 1970. Leaving us all wondering what his music would sound like if he was still around. What a shame.

    Chinese rock-a-billy?

    You're one unique dude!

Just as long as he's not opening up for the Grass Roots at the local casino.

For my money, Jim's version of All Along The Watchtower is in the top five of all time great rock songs!

    HAHAHA!

I actually heard that term YEARS ago when I was in a band. There was another band using a practice hall next to ours and they came over to ask us to "turn it down".(We had an AWESOME sound system)

We asked what type of music they played and the bass player said "Chinese Rock-a-billy". It stuck with me all these years.

I liked Jimi's version of "All along the watch tower" but I LOVE Frank Marino's version.

    Without Jimi

There is no Frank Marino. You can separate music into 2 eras. Before Jimi & After Jimi

    Yukon Cornelius said it best

"You eat what you like, I'll eat what I like!"

And sorry,,,,,Frank Marino would have been Frank Marino with or with out "Jimmay!"

Another example of "Frank Marino did it better" is Norwegian Wood.

    Better.

    IMHO.

    Never Heard of Him !!

But I'll Google and Youtube him and get back to you.

I'll take Rainy Day Dream Away and Voodoo Child over anything. Maybe throw in Machine Gun.

Frank will have to be impressive to change my mind that "Jimi" chnaged everything.

    Pete Townsend

First off, I love the Who and Pete was the weakest link if you only count him as a guitarist. Horrible guitar player. Great song writer. 1. Daltry, Moon, Entwistle then Townsend. Couldn't play lead to save his chord crashing life and should never be mentioned in a Jimi (Latin for God) post...

    Rick

I disagree and if you listen to thier stuff he played a good guitar and was appreciated amount his peers. Listen to the early stuff.

My vote is for The Who to be the best Rock and Roll band of all time. More music, more Rock, longer lasting than anyone.

I am a huge Townsend fan. He's not Jimi but by noway a horrible player.

I agree with Scott. And to put Daltry above Moon and Entwistle? All he did was sing. Granted, a signature voice. Moon is well known as one of the greats. And in my mind, Entwistle is one of the most underrated bassists ever, except by those in the know.

    Just Sing?

The signature sound is Daltry, the scream in Won't Get Fooled Again" or chants "Out Here In The Fields" it ignites more chills than Pete crashing chords, admit it.

    PS, I love the Who

Can't we ALL just get along?

I feel that The Who ARE one of the best in all of ROCK....BUT,

It was THE WHO that brought it along. Daltrey is the epitome of a REAL singer. He CAN still do it after 30+ years, and it's because he learned to do it right. He sings from the abdomen...unlike most of the has-beens who sang from the throat!

Paul, You, my friend hit the nail on the head!!! If anyone doubts that Entwistle wasn't a great bassist, all I have to say is...Rent the movie "The Kids Are Alright" and just watch the man PLAY! HE carried the mood while Townsend played in his own way...but it WORKED!.

Pete Townsend is a good guitar player, and conveys his playing well, but the rest of THAT band carried him to his euphoric height....He was a better SONG WRITER, and did what he did as HE sees fit....and it worked for them.

His words are FAR more relevant than his guitar....in my book.

Moon...What can you say? Peruse the various video that is available, and watch a couple back to back. He NEVER played the same song, the same way....but will ASTOUND even some of the classically trained drummers as to how he "customized"(for lack of a better word)each and EVERY song that he played. Never the same...ALWAYS great!

How did we get so far from JIMI'S birthday? Keep on ROCKIN' in the FREE WORLD Chris

    Hey Paul, Agreed

Watch The Who in the Concert For NYC (9-11 tribute to NYFD) They blew everyone off the stage. This will give you chills to see the firemen and families singing along. One of the most inspired performanced ever.

One of my greatest concert memories is the entire crowd at Shea Stadium singing Behind Blue Eyes during their farewell tour. BOTH NIGHTS!
