has any of you great wallies ever had a noise problem with w.m. 688 oil fired steam boiler. we just installed a new 688 boiler as per manual . every thing went fine no problem then we went back 2 weeks later to check and couldn't help but hear a steam hammer noise in the boiler itself at the very beginning of steam production but before any pressure. the burner is a carlin low-high -low. The boiler has 2 tankless coils and the boiler maintains 180 all times . it is piped using 1 5" riser and header at the correct height and a 2-12" equilizer.gravity wet return.the water level looks ok.any help would be appreciated. st heat

Clean it
I'm almost certain a lot of dirt has washed into that boiler. This can cause steam to form in a pocket below the waterline, and knock when it finally breaks thru the muck.
Hopefully you've used nipples and caps rather then plugs in the skim tapping and the extra return tapping, so they can be opened easily. Once these are open you can flush the boiler out with a hose. Obviously you don't want to do this when the boiler is hot!

I agree. the first thing i would is open up a skim tap and see what floats out.
