unit icing up?

I wonder if someone could tell me if an outdoor ac/heat unit has a defroster in it? My heat was working fine (heat pump/electric) but there was an inch of snow/ice all around the unit. There was some rain a few days ago but none when the ice formed?? All 4 sides were completely covered yet the fan and heat functioned. It did seem to run a great deal more than usual but that might have been my imagination due to the extra noise the situation caused. The thermostat on auto DID shut it on and off throughout the night. The temperature only reached 29 degrees at night and 50 during the day. THANK YOU (please respond to my e-mail.....pl34986@aol.com)

Yes
a heat pump has a defrost system. If the unit froze up the outdoor coil and didn't clear in after 90 minutes of run, something is wrong with this system and should be checked ASAP.0
