Unfortunatley, you don't mention whether this unit is equipped with the original GE burner or whether it has been retrofitted with a gun type burner. I don't believe the change in refractory is causing the problem you describe. As you are probably well aware, the flue passages for this unit are located around the circumference of the boiler and there should be scrubbers (baffle plates) in the flue passes. I'm not quite sure how you got refractory of a different material made into the typical GE chamber. Please provide a little more information re: burner, last time serviced etc.
Unfortunately once again, if you still have the original GE, it was a very efficient piece of equipment, regretably, replacement parts are no longer available in a timely fashion. If you have had the unit converted, the process involved ends up decreasing the efficiency tremendously.

I replaced the fire bricks, with new refractory the 'new refractory' is silicon carbide which is supposed to have very high heat conductivity. It appears that this change has reduced the heat output and takes the system twice as long to produce steam. The steam that is produced is not high pressure. ANY help would be most appreciated...It's COLD!0 -

The only help you will find
Is help getting it out of the house!...switch it out NOW!..Most of these relics are long gone.0 -
My Guess...
....is you installed the incorrect chamber.Where did you find it ?Thought production stopped 25 years ago and stock was depleated 20 years ago... Any how either incorrect chamber or a combustion problem...
Has the GE been converted to a gun type burner ?
The stack and CO2 readings would help right now....High stack temperture would tell us if chamber is correct. Low CO2 will show combustion problem.. Correct combustion first ,then take stack reading...0
