We moved to our retirement cottage in Sheffield, Mass., in May 2006, when we began planning an attached 2-car garage with a 24 x 24 bedroom and bath above. We moved into the addition a few months ago. Of course, we extended the one-pipe steam heating system by moving a 63 EDR rad into the middle of the far bedroom wall and adding a 20 EDR to the 8 x 8 bathroom within the bedroom. We did not move the thermostat. It's still in the old entry hall, with the anticipator set by observation last winter for two cycles an hour.
Now that we've had some cold weather, I can report that the addition, with 6-inch walls insulated to modern standards, seems to heat for free, and that it appears to be remarkably stable with outside temps swinging from 16F to 59F yesterday, Thanksgiving Day.
In the center of the chart photo below are the respective degree days. The blips on the plot show sun heating on sunny days, absent on cloudy days. The 59 shows yesterday's balmy high, and the overnight low of 16F was last Sunday morning. The chart shows that the new bedroom temperature (absent the insolation) swings less than plus or minus one degree over a 43-degree outside temperature change. Love that T87!
