Frank, is that a Webster Type"R" sytem that you installed the Vaporstat on? I've worked on a few of those systems. Nice systems, once you get them set up.

Dimension \"A\" question
I was reading my Alfred G.King books last night, and I have a question. In the drawings & questions in the "500 Plain Answers to Direct Questions on Steam, Hot Water, Vapor & Vacuum Heating", Mr. King says, Q." What should be the difference in height between the end of the main & the waterline of the boiler?" A."Not less that 14" & a height of 18" is preferable." The IBR guide back this up. Can someone enlighted me?0 -
sorry about the typos
Yikes, the coffee must not have kicked in yet!0 -
Hmm..
Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to myself on this website.0 -
A Dimension
A 14-inch A dimension equates to 8 ounces pressure. A system designed to operate at less than 8 ounces pressure needs but 14 inches to stack condensate. Of course, if the system works well at 4 ounces, it needs but 7 inches.
Only a Vaporstat can ensure proper operation at that pressure.0 -
O.K.
Thanks Fred,
I guess I didn't think about the lower operating pressure.Because the main sizing seeming to be the same, and the IBR guide was an "up to date" version of residential steam systems. Based upon operating pressure of newer non-vacuum style vents on a 2psi system.0 -
New Vaprostats
Has any use had great success with these new mercury free models? I know "Steamhead" had installed one not so long ago, and was going to let us know how the devices have been working.0 -
As far as I know
it's doing fine. We haven't been back for the next round of upgrading on that fine old Webster system, but expect to in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, the owner says it's working a lot better.

I've tried a couple of the new vaporstats too. Seems fine so far. Never go on a steam repair call without one. Can almost sell one ever time if I try. Same goes for the Gorton #2 air vent. I finally found a source for them as no one in Denver stocks them or has even heard of them.

Sure is!
the Return Trap and Air Trap were gone, removed by knuckleheads who replaced the boiler. No vents at all on the dry return and the Pressuretrol was set at 6 pounds or so. We were called in for a steam leak, turned out the excessive pressure blew a gasket on one of the old 00026 F&T traps.
So we added the L408J, fixed the trap, added two Gorton #2 vents to the dry return, fixed a few other things and it heats much better. Still some work to do though, to get it into peak condition.
