Whining noise from boiler or somewhere
Hi All, I was wondering if you any of you ever had a loud annoying whining noise that comes from your boiler when its running? I have a steam system that is about 75 years old. An old GE that stands about 5 feet tall, but surprisingly still very efficient. This noise started about a month ago and is getting worse as time goes on. When I go downstairs I can hardly hear it and it doesnt seem like its coming from the gun at all. Could it be the chimney that needs cleaned out? It sounds very spooky because it does not stay at the same pitch, it constantly changes from high to low at random. Sounds like a ghost moaning at different pitch levels. Thanks0 -
sounds like
do you manually fill or is there a auto feeder on the system? reason i ask is you may have a small hole near the top of the boiler somewhere .

Hi, I manually fill it. Its so weird, as I get closer to the bottom, where the exhaust is, it gets a little louder, but when I put my ear to the top of the whole boiler I do not hear it hardly at all. Then when I come upstairs, I really can hear it, and its loud.0 -
have you been adding more water lately than usuall

No more than usual. Actually, I don't have to fill it all that often. The water level stays pretty much where it is at all times. Thanks0 -
Are you sure it's coming from the heat?
I have it on good word that it could be the WIFE....and the sound is...."I want to go somewhere warm for the winter".(think high pitched, and subliminal).
Just joking... but I would start at the chimney breech. These bad boys vented from the bottom, and have a trip switch that I've heard make the same noise when things start to go SNAFU. If I remember, it's right at the connector for the flue pipe...and it could be "half stuck". Chris0 -
Is it this? (Hopefully the picture uploaded ok) Should I plug it back in? If I push on it, there is a vent maybe 8 to 10 inches in diameter that opens up. But does not stop the noise.0 -
HA HA HA Yeah I know, we are going to move to Arizona soon.

So should I plug it back in? The post above has an attachment....0 -
Is this an oil or gas boiler?
If oil the whining can be caused by a restricted fuel line. Dirty filters etc,.. Also if the oil line is ran overhead and attatched to the floor joists you can get that strange whine. For that theres a thing called an "anti-hum device" that can be installed in the oil line at the pump. There was an error rendering this rich post.

Yes its oil fired and yes the lines are overhead attached to the joists. There is, I guess an oil filter, that is in the line right before the lines go into the the burner gun. It also has what seems to be a recirculation line coming out of it too. Also, about 6 inches from the outlet of the oil tank, there is also an oil filter. None of these have ever been replaced for going on 4 years. Is this something that I can do?(like changing the oil filter in a car) Or should I get an oil company to do it? Thanks A Lot....0 -
Noise !!
It could be the steam in the pipe. It can make noise if it is moving fast enough.. Any pics of the boiler?
