hot water heater QUESTION

I agree that the indirect is a good choice here--but just to give another option--AO Smith makes a Vertex water heater that is over 90% eff and direct vents. It also supplies over 200 gal the first hour.

  • have a few questions, i have gas in my house.Should i use a gas hot water heater or use a indirect water heater.which is better? indirect cost more , is the efficency better?which one will last longer ?do i want the boiler running during the summer months?

    Yes, yes and yes.

Better efficiency, better insulation, longer life ( life time if you get the right tank ). Your boiler running during the summer instead of shutting down for months is better for the over all life span of the boiler.

I think if those are your choices its a better investment in your home.

    that's me two cents

    agree

I agree. Hot water tanks are gas suckers. 40-50% eff at best. nothing like using a high eff boiler to make more hot water quicker than an old fashion crappy tank

    Depends

If you have an old high water content boiler and want to add an indirect, I would be in question. If new high efficiency boiler then definately. Tim

    Time to Upgrade???

If you have an existing hydronic system and you need to replace the water heater I too would go with the indirect. Since you are going to have to repipe and reconfigure why not upgrade to a mod-con(if applicable) or a high efficency boiler? Unless you already have done this, it would make great sense to look into this.

Many of the old atmospherioc boilers also fire in the range of 60-70% at best with no flue damper.
