Size of boiler

We are getting a new boiler for our home and two bidders recommended going down a size. Our house is 75 yrs old with minimal insulation. It is 2400 square feet. One boiler runs hot water on the first floor and steam on the second. We have a total of 566 tubes. The two bidders didn't not perform any kind of in depth analysis to come to their conclusions and my concern is that we don't want to be cold. How can I do a calculation myself quickly to feel comfortable with the size boiler I purchase.

Go to the \"Resources\" tab above

and seek "Heat Loss Calcs" and follow the instructions for the portions heated by hot water...

The tubes you cite have no meaning without knowing radiator style and even less not knowing your heat loss (for the hot water-heated part) and the square feet of EDR (Equivalent Direct Radiation) for the steam-heated part.

That the bidders had not apparently done calculations should not count against them at least until they order the boiler. Many contractors spend an awful lot of time preparing estimates and choose not to divulge the product of their time spent. It is their "intellectual property" that too often if given to a customer, is used against them to shop for their competition.

Burnham as a guide as well as Dan's book "EDR" which can guide you. But remember- size steam to the connected radiation, size HW to the heat loss...
