Swing adjustment for T-Stat

Just wondering what to set the swing setting on my digital thermostat for. I have an old hot water boiler system. A low number setting of "1" when set for 70* the gas will kick on at 70.2* and off at 70.8*. A higher setting of say "4" will kick the gas on at 69.0* and off at 71.0*. My question is what saves more money and/or puts less strain on the system?

What kind of stat, whose brand?

Our VisionPro/FocusPro stats are all set up for 6CPH "out of the box", which is the standard setting for forced air. They also can be set for 1 CPH(Steam),3CPH (hi-efficiency, or conventional baseboard, 9&12 CPH for electric heat. These cycles take the place of the old heat anticipators on the electromechanical stats.

OK - but what is a good cycle for HOT WATER. Is it better to cycle alot to maintain the temp or not?????

    Start with...

3 CPH. If you have cast iron baseboards, or cast iron standing radiators, you may need to tweak it back to 1 CPH, beacuse of the flywheel effect. If you have standard copper/aluminum fin tube, use 3 CPH. You have 4 setback/up periods; Wake,Leave,Return,Sleep on a programmable stat. You set the stat for a lower temp while you are asleep, and while you are away. The comfort temp is maintained during the wake & return cycles. The degree of setback is up to you, depending on your home's heat loss. Start with 10 degrees.

Right now it will run for 45 mins and be off for 2-3 hours. I have cast irom free standing rads.

    swing adjustment for steam system

Does the swing adjustment setting on a digital thermostat actually work with an old one-pipe steam system? I wondered if this may be too modern for an old system. My burners only ignite at the four times programmed into the set-back thermostat. Otherwise, it doesn't check to see how far off the temperature is from the setting, and pressing the override or the hold button does not make it check the temperature.

So, is this a bad thermostat, or does the feature not work with an old steam system?

    timing

you can have a 2-3 degree difference at the thermostat, and adjust the aquastat differential for 12-15 degrees to spread out the fire cycles of the boiler. As you play with these adjustments you can get good fire cycle times and longer circulation times.

They work just fine. You have to read the instructions a few times.
