Has Anyone used this boiler? Any feedback?

We will be installing a Weil McLain Ultra gas boiler in a replacement application in a few weeks. The existing system is cast iron radiation in one zone and an aluminum finned baseboard series loop as the other zone. Though I've installed other condensing boilers, this is my first time using the "ultra." Anyone know of any special considerations with this product???

    Install as per the manual

and leave it off the wall a few inches so you can get to the electrical terminal strip after you've got the exhaust and intake pipes connected.

    Ultra

Also, make sure to use a dirt trap or wye strainer on the return to catch anything from the cast iron radiators.

Good point! They should suggest that in the install instructions....

I have put in a few Ultras, including my own home. If possible do your wiring first, even before the venting, it's a little tricky wiring around the vent pipes. Follow the instructions exactly(primary/secondary etc.) I would be careful with a wye strainer due to the flow restriction you will already have getting through the heat exchanger. If you can find a dirt seperator for your application, that would be my choice. I couldn't find one smaller than 2" for a small cast iron/mod-con job I did recently.

    How about the Caleffi Dirtcal?

    Slightly off topic

That is exactly what I was looking for. I went to five of my local suppliers. They all told me the Caleffi or the similar Spirovent, or even B&G versions were not available form their distibuters.

    Wye strainer

You'd install it in the system loop, not the boiler loop. I don't think a wye strainer has much head resistance besides. As long as minimum flow thru the boiler is maintained, everything's good :)

    Ultra boiler

As others mention, do your wiring before the final PVC work, especially if you're wall mounting. The wall hung kit is not shipped with the unit BTW. Back up wrench the S&R piping as the compression connections to the aluminum boiler block are rather tenuous. Use a strainer or seperator on the return. Increase to recommended primary loop size ASAP after factory 1" nipples. Wire brush, tape, dope to factory nips as there's usually a little corrosion on the threads left over from the hydrostatic test at the factory. The OD reset curve comes factory set to flatten out at 32*F. Instructions to customize the curve might be in the new I&O manual. If not it's available from W-M. Download or view the I&O and vent supplement from their website before delivery so you have no surprises at delivery. W-M has an extensive downloadable library. Good luck.
