Vent hole on this steam radiator is smaller

Background: I have a one pipe steam radiator system and have bought this house a few years ago and am have replaced all the vents with adjustable steam vents.

The Situation: However the threaded hole in one radiator is too small to accept the standard screw in vent I have been using for all the others radiators! The threads in the hole look OK. There is an ancient vent in there now, it barely fits. It has a smaller diameter and is tapered smaller at the end. It only screws around 3/4 of a turn. I dare not screw it in further.

Ever hear of this? Can I purchase a vent with a smaller diameter screw in stem that fits? Do I drill a new sized hole and use a tap and install a standard vent? (never used a tap but would be OK doing it)
