I'm not competent to answer your question, but you'll get good answers here on the Wall. You ought to start a new thread, though - more people will see it.

steam boiler -- weil mclain vs utica
Hi guys,
We are about to commit to replacing our steam boiler, two of the three companies agree that we need about 800,000 btu/hr.
It now comes down to a Weil Mclain or a Utica. The Utica is $2000 less. Any thoughts? Any reasons not to go with the Utica?

What model
W-M and Utica boilers are being proposed?

800K BTU
Those are tremendous boilers for a residential application. Can you describe the building you're heating?

Weil Mclain or Utica is what has been proposed. The Utica option is $3000 less than the Weil Mclain. Just wondering if one is significantly better / different.
The house is about 6600 sq feet, built in 1929. The current boiler (installed 1958)is 2,000,000 btu/hr. but was sized to heat the house plus a 3 car garage, horse stables and staff apartment. We only heat the house and would put in a separate system for the apartment if we every decide to use it.
I got three bids for the job, two of contractors measured all the radiators in the house and came up with the 800,000 number. The third guy used past experience and "rules of thumb" and said 500,000 btu would do the job.
Thanks for any advice,

Carpet under baseboard
I have a hot water cast iron baseboard system. I have wall to wall carpet. If the carpet is up to and under the baseboard am I losing heat. There is very little room for air to get under the baseboard.0
