boiler system? furnace keeps running

It is one thing to play around in your own yard, but Chris it is downright DANGEROUS to play with someones boiler when you don't even know proper terminology. Everyone has to learn, call in someone who works on boilers and take a lesson for both your sake and the safety of all concerned.

building high pressure and furnace continuing to run
say i'm a novice and just got into a place with a boiler system. it's very old but looks updated with an expansion chamber. anyway long story short, if i turn up the thermostat to get the furnace to kick in, it will of course run. the system pressure is set to 18 lbs with a water setting of 130 degrees F. once the water is released into the system, the heat returns, i'd say it's a send send side and a return side with the pipes on the send heating, and the return in fact returning hot. what the proble is the system pressure keeps building past 18lbs, and the heat setting won't shut off the system at 130 degrees F. i tested the expansion chamber which is precharged at 12lbs and i do not get a reading on the pressure gage. the real surprise, is the furnace still will not shut off unless i manually turn the thermostat on the wall down. then the furnace shuts off, and the heating continues to circulate. i guess i'm not sure if its something as simple as adding air to the expansion chamber or not. or if there are deeper issues???? the system still maintains a pressure of around 5-10lbs even when the temp gage is at the minimum number. i have also had no, high pressure valve burps. at one time i let the system run to the red line which is 30lbs and the temp continued to climb regardless of the set point.
thanks,

Expansion Chamber
Thats an expansion tank not chamber now go right that on the basement wall 50 times. I'm guessing this tank is hanging from a large bulge in the piping which is the air purge. The diaphram in the tank is either bad or you just lost your air charge and tank is full of water. With no place to expand when you heat the water the pres. will go up till the relief blows at 30 psi.The tank needs 12 psi in it when THERE IS NO PRESSURE ON THE SYSTEM. Also 130 for a high limit is way to low ,Most baseboard and rad. systems are set to 180.0 -
I MUST AGREE
