We have a combination steam system and also connected to the system is baseboard hot water. We just got a new gas furnace. Now 2 of our radiators are spewing water. We replaced the vents and the problem continues. Can you help us?

    May we assume you meant...

    new boiler - not furnace?

The problem is from an incomplete or incorrect new boiler installation.

Most commonly, the boiler was never cleaned after installation and the cutting oils, flux, pipe dope and other installation contaminants within the boiler are causing "surging and priming" - the bain of steam installs. It's simple to fix and requires two things:

    1) Clean the boiler insides out with one cup of TSP/100,000 BTU's of input and

    2) Skim the boiler via the skim tapping until all "rainbow/oil" surface rainbowing is non-existent.

This is part of the installation and should be covered under warranty. It takes about an hour or two - tops!

The other thing may be pressure related. Typical steam systems are designed to work at between 2 and 1/2 pounds of pressure. If they inadvertently set the pressuretrol above 2 PSI's, the boiler water may be backing up the return squirting from the main vent - or, any radiator in the system.

One or the other problems are the cause.

    Both must be corrected.
