    Lucky!

Good example of fixing a furnace versus making sure the furnace is working properly...

You are all very fortunate to be able to write this post, as you said if it had happened when you were asleep, you might still be.

Please make sure that you landlord is getting a pro to install, and not a buddy. A pro would have likely caught the blocked chimney by making sure the furnace was working properly, and not jusr "working"

Congratulations on the rest of your life...you get to live it...

    This raises an interesting question

"getting a pro to install, and not a buddy".

How do you recognize one from the other?

Case in point: In my Baltimore place, I called a Yellow Page listed, well known and reasonably large outfit to replace the old and clogged furnace. What probably was a sub showed up. Left my carpet dirty, never used any instruments other than pliers, pipe wrench. No flue check, no burner check.
Next case: In my son's Baltimore house. Service call by recommended outfit. No flue check, damper still in piping to chimney, no fan motor replacement as requested, no instruments and I question whether wiring was fixed-- the burner would not shut off when the power switch was turned off.

So college students, now that you are educated in the ways of furnaces thanks to this amazing place, keep an eye on your new furnace install. Look at the installers truck, neat, organized, has a real sign on the side? I am sure the guys here can provide good details to look for.

And remember to keep fresh batteries in CO detectors because the other furnace is not being replaced. And tell your friends about your experiences with housing.

Where are you all going for Thanksgiving Dinner so you will be warm and well fed? You have much to be thankful for. And yes I know the sentence ended with a preposition.

Sounds like you figured it out.

For those two outfits yes but

it would be great if the pros had a label attached so one could make the determination before the jobs. Need more pros to be in Find a Pro in HeatingHelp.com

    Sigh.
