Sensor wire

is Plenum Rated Fire Alarm Cable. It has a red jacket (incidental) but is actually 16 GA shielded twisted pair wire. Commonly available and easy to see/trace assuming you do not also have fire alarm cable in the building.

I put tape labels on it every so often indicating "ATC" or the specific sensor keyed to a chart.

EDIT: Oh look- scrook got my back! :)

    Sensor Wire

Hi All, I thought this was going to be easy. I need to run about 60' of 2 conductor #18 shielded wire for an ODR sensor. I'm not having any luck locating this item through local sources. Can anyone recommend a retailer for this wire? Thanks, Roland....
  • Stat wire same thing,

I would think you could get this anywhere.

    *Shielded* stat/sensor wire

Try www.mouser.com or www.digikey.com both electronics parts suppliers, and filter your search for wire & cable for shielded, gauge, etc. You need not worry about "RoHS", and may not need to worry about plenum or riser rated (unless it's a commercial application then you may need plenum rated insulation.

    e.g. Mouser P/N 602-5610B1801-100

2*18AWG stranded, 100ft, black PVC (non plenum) insulation, $53, 1 week delivery.

    Mouser P/N 566-88760-100

2*18AWG stranded, 100ft, red FEP (Plenum rated), $131, stock

You'll pay extra for plenum cable!
Also try www.L-com.com they deal more in connectors and cable assy's (audio, video, phone, RF, computer, data, etc.) but may have shielded.

SHIELDED twisted pair Cat 5 network cable may also be an option, the wires are only 24 AWG or so, but there's 4 pair, in the cable -- using 2 pair in parallel would give equiv to 20 AWG, all 4 pairs in parallel equiv to 16 AWG.

    Try a temp control company...

Look up a local commercial temperature control company. They use plenum rated, shielded 18 all the time. We always used stranded, as there was less chance of breaking if the pull got kinked somewhere. Usually comes in boxes of 1000', but I bet they have partial boxes left over from jobs or they would cut off a length for you (wire is typically marked at intervals for length so you wouldn't even have to measure).
