but there's a company in Rahway that does steam- Palmer Heating. Get their info on the Find a Professional page, under Resources above.
If you're not in that part of Joisey, I believe there are some other steam specialists on there- can't remember who though, what a drag it is getting old.....

can't find my main air vent in the basement
I looked all over, on every pipe comming off the boiler, every pipe in the basement. I even looked for plugs or what possibly could be a plug. Only thing I found was something that said "back flow preventer" and that was on a copper pipe. I think it was the water feed to the boiler.0 -
it is an anit backflow supression devise ,just before your
valve designed to regulate the fill pressure into your boiler ,which is likely just before a valve to turn the water flow off entirely to the boiler to allow you to remove and replace the parts should it become necessary. these three "gizmoes" are located just after another valve designed to cut the flow of water off entirely ahead of them ,to make it real easy to get that done...0 -
no main vents either
I just had a new boiler installed, insulated all the pipes that were exposed and changed some vents. I think some old systems just dont have vents on the mains; not all but some.
I looked across the entire length of the piping till the branches and there is nothing resembling a vent. Could be you just dont have them, but Im a homeowner not a plumber.
Hey guys, can you install vents on the mains if they dont exist?0 -
Sometimes
you could get away with not installing main vents in the coal-fired days. Once the air was out it stayed out, so what if Junior's bedroom took an hour to get heat? It only happened once a day.
No more. With oil or gas firing we don't have an hour to spend every cycle. So main vents are critical.
It is possible to drill and tap into the main to install vents. Hire a pro if you're not experienced at this.
