Copper is OK below the waterline but the cyclical stresses on copper may wrench it open at the joints. Copper "work hardens" and expansion/contraction is work.

What material is suitable for riser pipes in a two pipe steam radiator system? My contractor just replaced iron threaded riser pipes with copper and I was told by my plumber that the soddered joints will leak when the system gets hot.0 -
