Boiler explosion on Long Island (Dan H.)

I just replaced a steam boiler where the LWCO was never flushed and it failed. The boiler dry fired and was ruined. The owner did not know there was a problem until his smoke alarms in the basement when off. Yikkes!

    I swear to you...

I never, ever, did work in that part of town...

Please let us know when the locals determine the cause. We might learn more than a thing or two.

    Thanks Dan.

    Here's another one

Amazing what lack of maintenance, inspection, and competence will do for you.

The "pictures" pdf is a bit large and may take a little longer to load, but it's worth it.

If you do a Goggle news search,
    for Boiler explosions.
You will see that Oct. and Nov.
have been bad months for Boilers and steam.

I fear safty first is becoming just a slogan.

    Boiler Explosion

I live on Long Island and saw the news clips. I quess it was a steam boiler. On the news they were showing a Relief valve and a domestic hot water coil that were found out side the house.I quess the relief vavle failed and strange that the coil gasket didn't blow out to relive the pressure. Where was the LWCO ? Bad things can happen when inexperience and neglect meet.

    also another boiler (pipe) failure

Salem, MA, 745 MW coal fired power plant:high pressure steam pipe failed, three workers working on a blower 20 feet below were badly burned, all three subsequently died.

Seems a fluke, plant had a good record -- time will tell (hopefully) what caused the failure.

  • Low water cut off?

How many LWCOs do you think get dissassembled and cleaned EVERY year? Here's a hint to give insight into "safety first".

I bought a house this fall with a steam boiler, and on the boiler there is a M&M67 Low Water Cutoff. It's plugged and the float is stuck.

There are two major (chain type) and one independant heating supply houses within 20 miles of me.

Two of the three never heard of gaskets for a M&M 67, nor were they going to order any. Nobody but me has ever asked for them.

I'll try the third supply house Monday. I don't have high expectations.

Hey Bruce and Kevin, do you know who stocks LWCO gaskets around here?

    In General

I am truly amazed that more people do not take advantage of regular Maintenance of the equipment in their house every year. I guess Dinner and Car maintenance come first. "Out of sight, out of mind".

    I always stock LWCO gaskets!

I make them from the back cover of my local phone book, or order them from anyone stocking M/M products.

  • Just watched the News 12 video

The piece of shrapnel the neighbor found looks like part of the back section of a Peerless . Another person found a round coil , which means it was probably a hot water boiler if it was Peerless .

We come across a fair amount of dry fired steamers a season , I never seen one have such a dramatic end ( yet ) . Would it posiibly being a hot water boiler make it more of a threat ?

Was that the couple who'd just moved in???

Her father called me from Maine wanting to know if we could get her a new one. Said the fire department saw the boiler glowing cherry red...

I couldn't have even considered getting to her until December.

She lucky to even have a house left.

  • They were my first choice.

Apparently, after three weeks in a row of visiting them, and them assuring me that they would have them on Tuesday, I stopped going there.

I tried the supply house by the Post Office, next. Nope. Nobody ever asks for them there, either.

I'll try the one on Rt 125 today.
