boiler reset

The Becket HeatManager works by strapping a single sensor to the boiler supply pipe. The microprocessor knows when the burner is running and off. It looks at the rate of change over time to calculate heat loads during each heat cycle.
If the boiler water temperature is hot enough to meet a heat call demand based on the heat load it calculated during the prior firing cycle - it delays firing the burner. This is how it saves fuel usage.
The Tekmar 256 is a true reset control in that it too, intercepts the call to fire the burner but adjusts the high limit of the boiler based on an outdoor sensor. I included some specs and an essay on reset curves.
It's simply a better mousetrap. It also has features like WWSD Warm Weather Shut Down, Boiler Maximum, Boiler Minimum, Automatic Differential, Room Occupied, Unoccupied etc. It allows you to select the shape of the reset curve based on your radiation load. It too, is microprocessor based and can make intelligent decisions. The primary difference - the Tekmar can change the high limit of the boiler. Why fire the boiler at 180 when it is 50F outside?
Both units are similarly priced and easy to install.
The Beckett website has a great presentation on the HeatManger http://www.becketthm.com/ .
We had one service company installing several units each week. Then suddenly, there was a problem and they stopped buying them. I wish I could recall the issue. Suffice it to say, the Tekmar unit is much more accurate in its decisions and can yield more savings
Hope this helped you.
