I have a Brad Ford White electric 40 gal water heater that is tripping the upper limit. I replaced the thermostat and both upper and lower elements yesterday and the limit tripped again.
The water heater is 5 years old and has a Grundfos recirculating system. I did not che the voltage and the system does not have a expansion tank. Any suggestions?

Electric Heater
Sir:
You more than likely, have interlocking thermostats on your heater and the upper stat is tripping due to excessive heat migration. Here is a little trick to try. Set your upper stat to the lowest setting, and your lower stat to the temp you want in the tank. The top stat has to satisfy before the lower stat will operate, but the limit is on the top, so when you satisfy the top half and the lower stat comes on, all the heated water builds up at the top and you trip on high limit. This only works if you have an interlocking design, but you more than likely do. Let me know if you have any questions.

You replaced everything except the part that is broken... the lower t/stat. It gets ten times the use beacause basically the HWH cycles on that stat. It is stuck in the closed position, change it and your problem is history.

Check the wiring.
not all of those upper stats wire to the same terminals. You could have power on the element without the stat in the circuit? The wiring diagram should be supplied with the stat or use a continuity meter to check the terminals.

upper element tripping
We have replaced over 50 of the lower tstats on Bradford White heaters. Apcom, apparently had a bad run on thermostats. The lower thermostat sticks in the on position and because it doesn't have a thermal reset, it trips the upper reset. We usually get the call " the water got extremely hot and then went cold"
As Hot Rod says, always check the wiring, voltage and amp draw with a clamp meter once you get the unit running. The cycle is upper tstat calls first then switches to lower.
Hope that helps.0 -
