Taco ZVC406 Hummmmmmmm
I think I made a mistake, I wanted isolation for my thermostats and bought a ZVC406. It is installed and working fine however the two transformers in the unit both humm. I tried disconnecting them individualy and they are both nasty. Is this normal? And if so, now I know why the local plumbing guy asked me why I wanted it. The two transformers both get quite hot as well.
The bigger issue is that this appears to be just a routing box, ie. there are no relays or scrs to isolate the thermostats from the valves. Now I ask, aside from the nifty wiring advantages, whats the point of a big buzzing box that does nothing? Am I off base here? Is there a better choice for isolation that would allow me to use the old standby honeywell transformer that doesn't make any noise?0 -
Taco zvc's are a great tool.
the ability to immediately diagnose a problem is the ticket.
are you using Taco zone valves?
when you have large draws on an electrical system it heats the lines to the motors, maybe the zone valves current draw is something to consider.0 -
EBV Zone Valves.
Im using Taco EBV zone valves which I understand draw next to nothing. And I agree, the diagnostic lights and the wiring ease are great. But the buzz is crazy. I dont need all this power in there, 80 watts. My thoughts are to just disconnect the two transformers and supply it with 24 volts with my old transformer.0 -
i havent used very many EBV's
i have a few ESP's left which draw next to nothing...one transformer is plenty to run the load imposed....with them...
the new EBV's i have installed are only installed on single zone control sub systems and as such determining what is what is very simple as they have point of use transformers for the individual zones...0 -
The ZVC will hum sometimes if it is used with some of the elecronic t-stats that are "power-robbing." Try reversing the polairity of the transfomer/t-stat connection. the board soes not seem to be polarity snesitive...but the stats are. In some cases, I've just done awya with the fancy stat and put in a simple stat that makes or breaks. Also, if there is more than one Taco control, or if you are using some other controls with the one you have, the polarity must be clean.

Relays?
Well, this box, the ZVC406 appears to have no relays except for the end switch relay. I kind of thought it would have relays or scr's or something to isolate the stat from the valves but it doesn't appear so.0 -
I ordered a new transformer that will fit inside the box. As a temporary fix, I have the old honeywell wired into it and its not making any noise. I tried reversing the thermostat but it was no help. I disconnected the transformers completely and all I can say is that they both humm. Probably not an issue unless you mount it on the ceiling underneath the living room like this one is :-)0
