Found this today looking at a leaking indirect...never seen a manifold piped this way before...

We called it \"Pyramid\"...
piped. Assures equal flow to each unit. I always found two-pipe reverse return nicer looking - and does the same thing, e.g., assures equal flow thru each module.
It was a common schematic provided as an option with multiple boilers, water heaters etc.
