Guys,
How can I tell if the mains are venting quick enough?
I have a one pipe steam system, and currently have a Gorton #1 at the end of each main.

When the mains are cold, turn up the heat and time it's movement. Start your stopwatch when the header above the boiler gets steam-hot. Go to the main vent in question and stop your stopwatch when the vent gets steam-hot.

In general, a good time is between one and two minutes for the main to fill with steam.

    Tell us

the length and diameter of your mains, and we'll let you know. Then time them out like Noel says.

One of the mains is 49'
    The other is 33'
The diameter of the pipe is 2" (outside dimension 7.5").
I currently have one gorton #1 at the end of each main, and am considering adding others off a tree.It is one pipe system.
    Thanks...........
