Two Pressuretrols

The reason? If one were to fail, you'd be unable to know it.
If you see the pressure go to the higher setting, you immediately know the "normal (lower setting) one" failed, and the backup is doing its job. I.e., time to fid out why the main one failed - and repair it!

Two Pressuretrols
My Peerless steamer 64-12 has two pressuretrols. I was told that one is for the low setting and the other for the high. It doesn't make sense to me. Why would you need a low setting? I usually run 1.5lbs of pressure. The "low" one is currently set around 1/2 lb and the "high" at 1.5lbs.
Any advice on how to properly set these up appreciated. Thanks.0 -
Given the...
fact that steam boilers can become huge grenades if extreme presures ever occur, many err on the side of safety; installing one pressuretrol to work with, and one as a backup, should the "main/primary" one fail to function.
Cheap insurance indeed, and, once the boiler gets big enough to become a bomb, rather merely a grenade, insurance companies mandate backups - and with a manual reset at that!

Two Pressuretrols
Ken,
Does that mean they should both be set at 1.5lbs. if that is my desired high limit? Thanks.0 -
when I was doing heating my boss told that when a boiler was considered "commercial" (300,000btu's) that it needed to have a back up for both the LWCO and the pressuretrol. I don't remember seeing 2 on a residential job too often.0 -
Is this a Powerpile
System? If so some systems in the late 70's and early 80's had two pressuretrols in lieu of a redundant gas valve (not possible with Powerpile). The one tied into the valve circuit is the normal pressuretrol 1.5 lbs to .5 lbs setting. The other one should be wired into your powerpile generator feed to your gas valve. The setting on that one should be to shut off at some point below the 15 pound "Pop Safety" relief valve.0 -
redundant safeties
We are required here to put dual lwcos (1 w/ man reset) and man reset pressuretrol and operating pressuretrol on any of our steam installs.0
