You would be skimping on a huge unknown for what is arguably the most critical appliance you will own.

If you DO find a used one, you have to ask yourself why might it be up for sale?

To find one in the size you need without too many years on it and in serviceable condition, it is a crap-shoot.

It has to be disconnected, moved, probably re-instrumented, cleaned... (who knows if it was laid-up properly assuming it is not currently in service)....

No, go with a new one, maybe a Burnham Mega-Steam if the 288 SF model works for you.

Buy new, pipe it up properly and be glad that he did.

I've swayed a friend to stay with oil, but only if he can find a decent used boiler & burner to replace the coal conversion. He has 235 sf EDR. Please contact me offline if you come across one.

much of a friend,eh.Seriously ,the cost of the boiler is only 20% or so of the cost of a proper installation.Why would anyone at this point in time even consider something like this?
