Tekmar Relay VA Requirement

it can't be NIL, or they wouldn't just chatter when not enough juice is available.

  • Tekmar Relay 003

I am preparing to build a 20 zone panel and I know i will need at least 60VA for my 20 T510 t'stats.
I will also need power for 20 T003 Relays.
Can anyone advise how many VA it takes a t003 to energise?
(couldn't find this info in data sheet)

    any help appreciated,

Well, I just ran down to my truck to look at a 003 I had in there and couldn't find the coil VA rating. Nor can I find it online.

However I have always used this rule of thumb for relay consumption: Single pole- 1VA, add .5 VA per additional pole.

So by that R.O.T. a 003 would be 1.5VA per relay. So total consumption in your case would be around 30VA.

P.S. Take some pics.. Sounds fun!
  • Coil current...

is nil. That's why they don't list it...

Mark, I have massive respect for you and your contributions to this forum, but I am going to have to disagree. True one or two relays won't matter much but we are talking about 20.

Here are some coil ratings for some common 24VAC relays:

    Allen Bradley- 1.6VA DPDT,
    Idec- 1.4VA DPDT,
    Omron- 1.3VA DPDT

It's true that the relay probly won't use that much electricity but we can't design that way. Even if the Tekmar relay doesn't use as much, the VA should still be considered...

    Had a 003 also

    on my truck.

The only rating I've seen seen 2.5va. Is that a maximum rating?

  • It SHOULD be taken into consideration...

I didn't say it didn't. I said what I was told by a tekmar rep. It is nil, hence it's not listed. Have you actually ever tested one? I have. It was NIL. Low enough for me not to remember what it was. It may have an inrush coil loading factor, but its running amperage is nil.

And I appreciate your professionalism as well. What are the chances of all the thermostats calling at the same time?

  • What VA transformer do you have on it?

and are you starting all relays at the same time, or one at a time. And if one at a time, when do they start chattering?

Wouldn't be the first time I've mislead someone based on third hand information...probably won't be the last. If I'm wrong, my humblest appologies.

    not tekmar

who manufactures the relay, I would think not tekmar, more like omron or potter brumfield. get the manufacture and model ,google it, you'll find the coil wattage.

i'd agree with ME small compared to the other controls
