\"We've never done it like THAT before!\"

This turned out to be a pretty nice replacement job. It had a CI atmospheric in from the 1960's that equated to their gas bills being as high as the mortgage.

This was a gravity conversion with CI Rads that ultimately led to all the circs being mounted on the returns. We had never mounted our zone circulators on the return of the Hydroseparator so this was a little bit different for us.

It seemed like Matt did the Lions share of the work while I waited in the truck, ran for parts, picked my nose, talked on the phone, ate the kids halloween candy, read a book....you get the idea.

There were actually two zones with one zone circ feeding a recent addition and hydrocoil in the kitchen, and the other zone feeding the other two zone pumps which handled all of the radiators in the house. (3-stories took quite a while to fill/bleed.)

Venting was my main concern in that we had to rent a lift, go 40' in the air, and glue in 10' sections of sch40 PVC, lower, glue in more pipe, lower, and so on. Renting the right lift was worth the price of admission at $315.00. I have pictures of that at the office (at home right now), but Matt had a good idea to use a pulley, rope, and hook, to lower the pipe as we added sections.

On top of tearing out the 360,000 btu gas sucker, we also got rid of the 75 gallon water heater and replaced it with an 80-gallon indirect. Very nice for future gas bills.

The Knight 285 satisfied the 80 gallon indirect from cold fill in 23 minutes. Not bad.

    couple more pics

System is slow tonight, I'll post a few key pictures in the morning.

This 95 year old home is on the Historical Registry, but did give us wiring fits. It had a least 10 transformers in the mechanical room alone. Fried one stat in the process.

You might notice the ice-cube relays above my SR502. Even with that in the initial game-plan, tracing the wiring was a mini-nightmare.

    Impressive system

for an impressive home, Paul. Matt does very nice work as you supervise :)

Questions out of curiosity if you do not mind-

Is the gas line copper running up to the boiler before it goes to black iron?

The circulator closest to the Callefi- seems to have a 3/4" suction but is drawing from what looks like 1.5" or 2" copper. Seems like it is supporting a lot of pipe (or if reduced, would have been done further upstream closer to the existing pipe connections.

    Still- outstanding job!

    Copper Line

The copper line for gas is Type L copper that is brazed.

From the left side, the hydroseparator has one ¾" copper return, an 1¼" CI line that transitions to 1" copper before hitting the #2 zone circ, and there are an abundance of 2" blk lines that transition to 2" copper and then to 1" before returning to the #3 zone cir.

Flow rates are key on this once gravity system. Pump #1 is a 007 with IFC, Pump #2 is a 0010 IFC, and Pump#3 is a 0011 IFC. secondary flow and head seems to be well suited and responding very well even on the 3rd floor radiators.

It was 45°F today and with a 0°F as my design condition at 160°F. is was calling for 123°F target temp at the radiators.

The house was plenty warm at 74°F.

The only thing I want to address is the recirc line on the indirect calling 3-4 times today without anyone in the house using hot water. Seems like a big waste, especially when the Knight 285 low-fires at 57,000 BTU's.

I know you get the hangers through ARGCO but I can't find them on the site. Mabey it was just the expansion tank hanger. I found that but I love the hangers that you use on the copper of the wall. Very clean where can I find these?

pumps vs zv & vs pump

That job looks like it would have been ideal for ZVs and Stratos pump w/ deta P control.

    Tim

I have had a few jobs (residential new construction) that it would be ideal on, I am still waiting to hear availability. When can I get this pump in MY hands. I don't want to hear that it is here, there, and everywhere.

I am also waiting to see when Mark Hunt and the brain box display will be in my region. I am strongly leaning towards the Denver Wetstock event in April and I think I heard that the display will be there.

It's aluminum. Locally, we are purchasing it for $136.42 per 4x8 sheet. It is 100/1000 thickness.

    Nice!!

Nice looking job, Paul. With the cost of 2" copper, is there a reason the 2" copper is used rather than 3/4"? I presume this is a gravity conversion....
