TRV noise.

...since TRVs give a positive shut-off, do I need to use traps on the radiators?

Anyone have this problem?
I've got 2 jobs, one 2-pipe steam and the other hydronic, where TRVs are making a lot of vibrating sounds.
I've called Danfoss and asked "What's up?", but they said the only thing that does that is if they are installed in the wrong direction of flow.
That doesn't seem to be the case, though.
Any ideas?

Thats the only problem I've ever had also, in backwards.

Same here Scott,
installed 35 on a job, had one backwards(used my air compressor to double-check), switched-it and everything is fine.

TRV's
On a water system, if you're getting a rymthmic sound, banging, clattering etc., the valve is in backwards. You should be able to change the rymthm of the noise by slightly changing the setting on the operator.
If the noise is a humming whistling etc there may be too much pressure across the valve or velocity.
On steam systems, the only noise I have heard from a TRV is from trapped condensate flashing to steam when the valve opens.
Good luck.

Dwood,...
That's exactly it!
I went and checked it out today. How do I deal with the trapped water? I feel like the radiator needs a vacuum breaker. It doesn't seem like a piping problem.

Traps
If traps were there before, yes. Traps and TRV's do two different things; a trap keeps the steam in the radiator to get the BTU's out of the steam and heat the room, the trap closes on temperature rise, and opens to allow cooler condensate to exit.
The TRV opens and closes to allow steam into the radiator based on room temperature.
The trap and TRV work in tandom, with a trap only the radiator would be filled with steam any time the system was energized; with a TRV only your room may not reach set point without something to keep the steam in the radiator.
Before installing vent on radiator, I would make sure the trap hasn't failed and is trapping condensate in radiator.
Good luck,
DWood0
