Last weekend...
I was in NYC for Bass Player Live. Basically a trade show for bass players. The clinics are put on by the best in the business. The manufacturers reps are there with all the latest. At the end is a concert and lifetime achievement awards. Lee Sklar has played with everyone from James Taylor to the Doors to Reba MacEntire. They figure your can hear him on over 2000 albums. Tony Levin has played with many as well and is a member of King Krimson. In person, just regular guys.
Any bass players out there should definitely put this on their list for next year.0 -
WOW
Cool beans Paul.
Leland has played for EVERYONE. He was with John Lennon for awhile also.

And you can hear Tony Levin on Lennon's Double Fantasy album. Other notables were Stu Hamm, who played with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani; and Chuck Rainey who has played with Quincy Jones, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin and was part of the opening act for the Beatles at Shea Stadium.
Yeah, it was cool.0 -

Tony Levin, Jan Hammer & Eddie Van Halen at a Les Paul Tribute show in 1988. Now this would be a tour. Levin ripping it up. One of the most rockin' video's ever!!!0 -
Didn't Billy Shenhan play for Vai, or was it for David Lee Roth? I liked his tunes...

I resemble those remarks!! Well............not the girlfriend part.........
Now..............drummers are a whole 'nuther category.
How do you tell when the stage is level?..........The drool is running out of both sides of the drummer's mouth

Thanks, "M", that was great. That whole album is a favorite of mine. Anyone know what show that was from?0 -
My pleasure...
Something was said about it being on a show called "Fridays" which was similar (I guess) to SNL and that it was around 1982 when it aired. I was guessing '83 myself so I was pretty close...
If you scroll down to the comments somebody listed the players. Robert Fripp is the handsome, smily guy in the suit and tie. But you probably knew that...0 -
Ah yes, Fridays. The west coast version of SNL. Great show. Among others, Michael Richard came from there (later to play Kramer on Seinfeld).
For more info look up Andy Kaufman and the famous Friday's incident.0 -
Paul
Did you notice ( I'm sure you did ) Tony Levin playing the Chapman Stick ?
Great Stuff.

It's a shame,,,
You never hear this stuff on the radio. Too complicated for the general masses. I have a bud who had a band that played all this kind of stuff, "Yes" perfectly, the whole thing. They would empty bars, nobody wanted to hear it. They wanted, "FREEEBIRRRRD!!"
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Well, except for the bars stopped hiring them. LOL...0 -
There was a guy playing the Chapman at Bass Player Live, though I think he was just foolin' around with it. So much noise there I couldn't here what he was doing.
Most technical stuff is lost on the masses. Main stream sells. The stuff that musicians appreciate the rest of the world just doesn't get. A shame0 -
Agreed
I've always thought the problem came from the affinity for school boards to cut things like art and music when the budgets get crunched. But I preach to the choir...

Best Bass player of all time!
The best to ever pick up a bass was James Jamerson from the funk brothers. Listen to the bass line in Marvin Gaye's What's goin' on. Possibly the best bass line ever written, and he wrote it smashed, laying on the floor at motown in the middle of the nite. Sheehan and so many others admit that they can't hold a candle to Jamerson!Any true Bass player that say's they weren't influenced by his work is lying.IMHO0 -
Love his bass lines. We do Reach Out by the Four Tops. That bass line runs the whole song.0 -
Jamerson
I've spent many hours learning his lines thru the years. There are notes that just shouldn't fit, but they DO somehow. amazing stuff!0 -
Berlin
James Jamerson is great for sure.
Check out this weird 1970's Jeff Berlin.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjWu9p-GTT4

One of the funkiest bass players ever, credited with inventing the slap bass technique.
Enjoy the groove...
